October achievements at Hailsham Swimming Club
Welcome to the second of our series of monthly newsletters highlighting all the great achievements of Hailsham Swimming Club and its members throughout the month. With competition season now in full swing, alongside the sixth session of our Club Championships and the first round of the Arena League season, October promised to be busy month for Team Hailsham. Despite the busy schedule, Hailsham Swimmers rose to the occasion, and October saw another month of hard training, successful competitions, and great personal achievements.
A look back at October competitions
October 7th – Club Championships Session 6
A fast-paced afternoon of swimming at the 6th session of our Club Championships saw more county times and personal bests achieved across the 200m breastroke, 50m butterfly, 100m backstroke, and 200 freestyle events. Our Club Championships provide an excellent opportunity for younger swimmers to get their first experience of swimming in a competitive environment, and so it was great to see many new swimmers taking part!
October 14th – 2023 Arena League Round 1
Heavy traffic on the M25 and slippery diving blocks weren’t enough to prevent Team Hailsham from putting in an excellent performance at the first round of the Arena League South Division 2 East, which took place at Crook Log leisure centre in Bexley, London. Seven 1st place, six 2nd place, and 15 3rd place swims across multiple age groups were enough to secure Team Hailsham 4th place on the night against very strong competition. A great evening had by all, and we now look forward to the second round of Arena League at Pavilions in the Park in Horsham on November 11th.

October 21st and 22nd - Sussex Winter Short Course Championships 2023
Hailsham Swimmers did themselves and the club proud at the Sussex Winter Short Course Championships at the K2 Crawley. A successful weekend of swimming saw Team Hailsham bring home five gold, six silver, and ten bronze medals in total. There were also new club records achieved by Olivia Dolan in the 50, 100, and 200m backstroke events, alongside some excellent personal best swims across the board.

October 29th – Crawley Winter National Chaser Open Meet
One week after the Sussex Winter Short Course Championships, Team Hailsham were back at the K2 Crawley, this time for a Level 2 Nationals qualifying meet. A small group a swimmers attended with Hailsham’s younger swimmers James Allen, Arran Chen-Tierney, and Isadora Bennet-Brewerton swimming great times. Hailsham’s performance swimmers Elizabeth Collis, Olivia Dolan, and Grace Woods also had great swims in their sprint events.

Personal achievements
Olivia Dolan
Olivia Dolan, competing for Sussex County at the Inter County National Team Championships on the 8th of October, swam an amazing 100m backstroke race, coming 4th in Division 1 with a huge personal best time of 1.06.84 in the girls 12/13yrs age group. Olivia also had an excellent 50m backstroke swim with a time of 31.50 in the medley relay team, who achieved a 6th place finish. Everyone at Hailsham Swimming Club is hugely proud of Olivia for representing the county at such a major competition!

Beth Collins
A truly memorable month for our Masters Squad swimmer Beth Collins! The month started with some excellent swims at the Masters Regional Championships on October 1st at K2 Crawley. Beth brought home 5 medals, alongside recording some Masters personal bests in the 400m freestyle (5:07.59), 100m freestyle (1:04,88), and 100 butterfly (1:13.45) events.
Beth then travelled up to Ponds Forge in Sheffield for the Masters National Championships on the weekend of the 28th/29th of October. Not letting the pressure of swimming at a national level competition get to her, Beth swam lifetime best times in the 100m butterfly (32.82), 100m IM (1:12.50), and a Masters best time in the 100m freestyle (1:04:26).
