Bath/Alkmaar Twinning Association
The Bath/Alkmaar Twinning Association recently invited Bath Dolphin to take part in their ceremonial "sounding of the Alkmaar gong", which was held in the Guildhall in the presence of the deputy Mayor, followed by a formal reception.
This is a new tradition which was started last year, as a means of ensuring the story of the gong and its role in Bath's twinning with Alkmaar is kept alive. The gong was presented to the city back in 1947 as a token of friendship between the two cities.
Bath Dolphin is the sports club with the longest association with Alkmaar, 75 years this year, which is why we were honoured to be asked to take up the gong mallet, as guests of honour at the ceremony. The mallet was wielded by club President Phil Brake who, thankfully, didn't break it 😁
