Sleep Talk

Our first talk of the season will take place on Tuesday 30th September at 7.30pm, and will be about sleep! It'll be held virtually via Microsoft Teams, and will last for one hour. The Meeting link will be communicated nearer the time to Derby Excel members. 

The talk will be delivered by Gavin Rackard, MSc, SENR, ISESA 

Gavin will cover the following topics: 
1. What is sleep and what are sleep cycles?
2. The sleep characteristics of athletes. 
3. To nap or not to nap?
4. How can sleep be used to help your performance?
5. Nutrition for sleep. 
6. Practical application for athletes and parents. 

Gavin's Biog: 
Gavin has an MSc. in Sport and Exercise Nutrition from Leeds Beckett University and BA in Exercise and Health Studies from Waterford Institute of Technology. He is a Practitioner Registrant on the Sport & Exercise Nutrition (SENr) of the British Dietetic Association and an ISAK Level 1 accreditation.

Gavin’s current role is as a Performance Nutritionist and PhD student researching nutrition interventions in sleep elite athletes and support staff. His current research interests are primarily in the area of nutrition and sleep with a scoping review currently being undertaken as part of Year 1 in the PhD. Further research with subjective assessment questionnaires, objective assessment of sleep using wearables and a how specific nutrition interventions aid sleep will all be researched over the coming years.
