Club History
Mitcham Marlins Swimming Club is a relatively new club, having been set up in September of 2018. The club is based in Mitcham, in South West London which had been without a swimming club for over fifteen years. This meant an entire generation of swimmers living locally had to travel elsewhere to find a club. They believed fifteen years was too long for a town which has a public pool and a population of over 60,000 to not have a swimming club so decided to start one.
The club was set up in Mitcham for two reasons. Firstly, to offer the next generation of talented local swimmers the choice to participate at their local pool. Secondly, simply to offer young people in the local area another option for getting active, an important part of a healthy lifestyle.
The club started with just ten swimmers on a Friday night but has grown steadily ever since. Our club or 'swimming family' as we like to call it, now has over a hundred members, operates five days a week and competes regularly. In January of 2020 an elected committee took on running the club, allowing us to ensure all our members and parents have a say in what we do and how we operate.
The club isn't stopping there as even though we're a young club, we've got big ambitions. We want to offer as many people as possible the opportunity to get involved in a sport that can offer people an option to stay active throughout their life. The club and those who run it are passionate about getting young people active. We believe the more opportunities young people are given to be active the more chance they will choose to do so.
