Ross McCafferty - Head Coach

Ross is the REN96 Head Coach and leads our performance programme. He is a fully qualified level 3 swim coach as well as studying Sports coaching and development at both the University West of Scotland and City of Glasgow College. Ross has been involved with the Scottish swimming national programme for the past five years taking up multiple roles at a range of different levels.  Ross has a passion for developing athletes to fulfil their individual protentional while challenging them to be the very best they can be every day.  “My coaching philosophy is simple everything we do must have a purpose to it, and every day we must try and be better than the one before.”

Euan Gumbrell - Assistant Head Coach

 

Euan has been the Development Squad coach at REN96 for the past two seasons, helping athletes progress from grassroots to national level competitions. Holding his SSCQ and Strength and Conditioning qualification, Euan is committed to both performance and personal development, ensuring athletes reach their full potential. He strives to create a supportive environment where athletes can strive both in and out of the pool. Passionate about continuous learning and athlete progression, Euan plays a key role in the club's success and the future development. Euan graduated from the University of the West of Scotland with his BSc in Sports Coaching in Spring 2025.

 

Alan Dickson - Age Group Coach (Renfrewshire)

Alan is a level 3 coach who joined the club in summer 2021. A coach since 2006, he started out as a poolside helper at North Ayrshire Swimming. During his time at North Ayrshire he was Junior Coach and spent three periods as interim head coach.  Alan believes that age group swimmers should pursue excellence in all four strokes and that continuing to acquire new skills is essential for both swimmers and coaches. Alan has coached age group swimmers who have subsequently qualified for British, Scottish and District level events.  Alan sees his role as ensuring every swimmer has the opportunity to reach their potential, he is passionate about coaching and loves helping swimmers achieve their go

Heather Allan - Age Group Coach (East Renfrewshire)
 
Heather is a level 3 coach and studied Sport Psychology and Sport Studies at the University of Stirling. She started as a triathlon coach before setting her focus on honing her skills in the swimming world. Since 2015, she has taken on multiple lead and head coach roles, as well as being involved in different roles within Scottish Swimming programmes. Heather believes age group swimming is about continuous development of all 4 strokes across all distances. Every day is day 1 and each session must be approached with the same energy and willingness to learn. She believes swimmers and coaches must work together as a team to achieve their goals. “I believe it is my role to work with the swimmer to help them achieve their full potential by helping them be the best person they can be”.

 

Calum Johnston - Coach

Calum has been involved in swimming for over 35 years, swimming at national level and laterally as a master with REN 96.   He is also a school teacher and believes in the development of the athlete holistically. Calum mainly works with Age Group and Junior Development swimmers and believes that in the early years the focus should remain on developing all aspects of performance.   He believes that swimming is a sport that develops skills for life and that the personal skills, friendships, self discipline and memories make swimming the best sport of them all.

Victoria Torrance - Foundation Coach

Victoria has been a part of the REN96 family since she was 7. She competed with the team for 11 years and in her final year assisted coaches on pool side where her passion for coaching continued and she joined the coaching team. She is also a qualified swim teacher and enjoys seeing the kids progression from learners to strong swimmers. She believes that swimming is a great sport for letting out stress and developing skillls. Swimming is open to everyone and she loves seeing confidence buidling and life long friendships developing.

Rob Barrett - Coach

As well as being a referee, Rob is also a coach and part of the lifeguard team too! He has a UKCC level one qualification. Rob isn't aligned to a particular squad or takes dedicated sessions but often provides holiday cover for Foundation, Skills and Development squads. You can often see him poolside helping other coaches when he is not refereeing for REN96, other clubs or at District meets
