WEST DISTRICT SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND 2

Kate Hadden

Following REN96 swimmers’ fantastic performances at the first weekend of the West District  championship in October, there were big expectations of them for the second weekend of the championship on 11 & 12 November at Tollcross in Glasgow - they didn’t disappoint!

On Saturday, 17 REN96 senior age group (14 years and above) swimmers had a fantastic day in some seriously tough racing, setting plenty of personal best times and coming home with 3 gold, 2 silver and 8 bronze medals, along with 20 top ten finishes.  A number of REN96 swimmers also achieved consideration times for the Scottish short course championship in December - well done for all these great achievements.

It was always going to be a big ask for the younger REN96 swimmers to match the great results achieved by the senior swimmers on Saturday but there is no doubt the youngsters gave it a real go.

20 REN96 under-14 year old swimmers from the club’s Development, Age Group and Senior Performance squads competed, set 45 personal best times and won 3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals.

Coaches Alan Dickson and Heather Allan said “The aim for the day was to build on the first  weekend from 3 weeks ago and our training has been targeting the specific areas that we felt needed improvement - there were some excellent results and that’s down to the swimmers hard work.  The medals are great but are really only part of the story - the number of personal best times that have been set shows that it really is about the individual swimmer making steady improvement and there is no doubt that the club is moving forward.  We are at the point in the season where we are starting to see big improvements in speed, skills and race tactics. It’s great to see the swimmers’ hard work in training paying off in their racing and building on what has already been an excellent start to the 2023/2024 season.”

REN96 gives a big “thank you” to volunteers Lindsay, Angela and Rihanna for helping the coaches manage the swimmers.
