We're thrilled to announce that Grace Blair from Calibre Squad has been selected for the Swim England North East Region – Open Water Squad 2023. This is a remarkable achievement for Grace, and we're excited to support her over the next 12 months as she embarks on this journey. The selection will provide Grace with a fantastic opportunity to refine her technical, tactical, and physical open water skills alongside other swimmers of similar age and ability from across the North East. With the overarching goal of progressing further up the pathway, this experience will be instrumental in her development as she transitions into a youth athlete in the not so distant future.

Since its inclusion as an Olympic event in Beijing 2008, open water swimming has grown in popularity, with British athletes winning three out of the six medals awarded. Open water swimming demands high levels of endurance and strength, making it a challenge for all swimmers regardless of their experience.

The camp itself will comprise a skills session in the water, followed by land-based tactical discussions, and culminate in a race of 1.5-2.5Km, ahead of the NER Open Water Championships on 1st July 2023.

We're thrilled to see Grace take on this exciting opportunity and hope that it will enable her to hone her skills further and advance in the Swim England national swimming talent pathway.

One thing is for sure though - after recent events, I'm sure she will agree that the open water is certainly safer than the bike!
