Parent on Duty
Parent on Duty (POD) – What You Need to Know
At Laois Marlins, the safety and well-being of our swimmers are our top priority. As part of Swim Ireland’s safeguarding policies, we operate a Parent on Duty rota for all training sessions. This role supports our coaches by having an additional responsible adult present throughout the session, helping to reduce risks and ensure someone is available in case of an emergency.
What is the Role of the Parent on Duty?
-
Arrive before the session starts and stay until all swimmers have been collected.
-
Be positioned where you have full view and hearing of the pool – not behind glass or in the stands.
-
Remain attentive during the session – you are there to observe, not to socialise or be distracted.
-
Keep an eye out for swimmers leaving and returning to the pool (e.g. toilet breaks).
-
Ensure the attendance record is signed in coordination with the coach.
-
Support the coach in the event of an emergency.
-
Report any concerns to the coach or the Club Children’s Officer after the session.
Key Guidelines
-
The rota is shared in advance via club communication channels.
-
If you cannot attend your assigned duty, you must arrange a replacement.
-
You must be over 18 years old. Athletes cannot act as the person on duty for their own session.
-
You are expected to stay until all swimmers have been collected.
-
Repeated failure to show up may result in disciplinary action.
Why It Matters
Having a Parent on Duty is not optional – it is a mandatory safeguarding requirement under Swim Ireland rules. Sessions cannot go ahead if there is no one present in this role.
We thank all parents and volunteers for your continued support in keeping Laois Marlins a safe and supportive environment for our swimmers.
If you have any questions or are unsure of your responsibilities, please reach out to the Club Committee or the Children’s Officer.
