SwimMark Club

Greenwich Royals Masters provides structured training for adults (18 years or older) in an inclusive and supportive environment.

Whether your objectives are competitive swimming, triathlon preparation, open water events, or simply improving overall fitness and technique, our sessions offer expert coaching and a positive training atmosphere for swimmers of all abilities and backgrounds.

Where and when do we swim?

We offer morning and evening coach-led sessions at pools across Greenwich. More information on when and where our sessions take place can be found here [link]. We occasionally have access to sessions in the Competition Pool at the London Aquatics Centre.

Our Masters squad structure

Our Masters squad is organised into three different sections. Lanes are generally arranged by ability so that sessions can be tailored to support swimmers’ goals. Sessions are 60 - 90 minutes in duration.

Development (up to 5 hours per week)

Intended for swimmers who want to focus on skill development, improving their stroke technique and building and maintaining fitness through structured training. Sessions typically cover stroke efficiency, drills, and aerobic conditioning.

Please note that our development squad is not a learn-to-swim programme. Swimmers must already be able to swim frontcrawl, backstroke, and breaststroke competently, sustain swimming for the duration of a session, and be willing to attempt butterfly occasionally.

If you are looking for adult learn-to-swim opportunities, these can be found here.

Approximate distance per session: 1500 – 2000m

Training (up to 6 hours per week)

Suitable for swimmers aiming to maintain or improve fitness through regular, structured training. Sessions will combine aerobic conditioning, stroke technique and speed work, with optional preparation for competition.

Swimmers should be comfortable completing longer sets in all four strokes. While many of our Masters mainly swim for fitness and enjoyment, some also choose to compete at local or regional Masters events.

Approximate distance per session: 2000 – 2600m

Senior Performance (up to 7 hours per week)

The Senior Performance section is designed for experienced swimmers targeting high-level Masters competition or those with advanced performance goals. Sessions focus on high-performance conditioning, advanced technique work, and race preparation.

Swimmers should have strong technical ability across all strokes and be ready for intensive training and race preparation.

Approximate distance per session: 2500m+

Equipment required

To get the most out of training sessions, we recommend that swimmers bring their own kickboard, pull buoy, hand paddles and fins.

Competing as a Masters swimmer

Masters competitions are friendly, inclusive events that emphasise participation, and we encourage all members to take part. We have swimmers who compete at every level, including at local meets, the Kent County Championships, and regional and national Masters competitions. Some aim for top results, while others simply enjoy competing.

We also have swimmers who take part in open water competitions and distance challenges such as the London Dock2Dock.

All Masters swimmers are invited to swim in our annual Club Championships.
