Lucy Charles-Barclay - Ironman 70.3 WORLD CHAMPION [Marbella, Spain - 8th November 2025]

One of the most inspiring things to witness in sport is the resilience of true champions β€” those who are knocked down yet find the strength to rise again. Watching our teammate Lucy do exactly that on the world stage was something very very special. Just four weeks after a heartbreaking DNF in Kona at the Ironman World Championships, Lucy demonstrated exactly what champions are made of, returning with extraordinary determination to win the IRONMAN 70.3 World ChampionshipWe are so proud of her - not only because becoming a world champion is an exceptional achievement in itself, but it's the way she fought back, with grace, grit, and unshakeable resolve that moved and inspired all of us who get to train alongside her . . . a true champion in every sense of the word.

Wishing Lucy the best of luck in the T100 World Finals in Qatar in a few weeks time - it promises to be a remarkable finale to an unforgettable season!

British Finswimming Long Course Championships 2025
Organised By British Finswimming Association
University of Bath Olympic Swimming Pool
21 June 2025 Saturday

The Long Course Championships is one of the two major finswimming events in the UK. This time we are in University of Bath for the gala. It’s a fun event! I entered into 7 races on the day, and I made my first attempt to race 200 surface (with Monofin) – and I am very happy that my time in fact met my expectations, but there’s also a lot to improve.

If you are new to finswimming: We race with either bi-fins or monofin. Bi-fins are similar to what you used to train with, but only a limited models are permitted to race. Our monofin is a large one, the weight of it is around 3kg. In an apnoea event, we race with monofin entirely underwater. A surface event is with a monofin and a snorkel, and a bi-fins event is of course with bi-fins and a snorkel.

The next one will be the open championships back in London in winter, and I look forward to racing in the meet!

Results:
Age group: V1 (1981-1990)

HO-HO-HOliday celebrations & 2024 End-of-Year Awards

We had a great turnout and a lovely afternoon at our 4th Annual HO-HO-HOliday meal at Zizzi's on 15th December. For the first time this year, we asked members of the squad to nominate teammates who had inspired them throughout the year and the results are below :) Congrats as well, go out to our award winners recognised at the club's annual awards evening the following week: Top Swimmers [Federica & Peter] and Most Improved [Beth & Pouya]

Last few galas of 2024: Barnet 1500, NUEL Open Meet, Inter-Counties, British Finswimming Championships, Essex Winter Games . . . and hanging out with an Olympian

Well done to all of our teammates who represented the squad at the following galas to round off the 2024 competition calendar!

Essex Winter Games - Following his great results at Nationals in Sheffield, Joe was back racing the following weekend representing the Masters squad at the [non-Masters] Essex Winter Games. He came away with these impressive results: 50 Fly 4th [25.25], 100 Fly BRONZE [56.82], 50 Free 7th [23.82], 100 Free 12th [53.42]

As well both being part of relay teams, Joe also won a Bronze medal in his 50 Fly and Peter came 4th in his 50 Back. Can you spot them in this photo of the Middlesex squad?

Open British Finswimming Championships - on 30th November, Marcus competed at the British Finswimming Championships held at Beceknsham Leisure Centre and came away with an incredible 6 Golds and 1 Silver medals! For anyone who doesn't know much about this branch of our sport, Marcus has written a summary for us below:

Finswimming isn't a popular sport, this is one of the two major events happening in the year (Summer Open and Winter Open). Summer open is usually long course in Bath and Winter Open is usually short course in London.

Some introduction to the sport, there are 4 swimming styles in finswimming
Apnoea: Underwater only, no breath, with monofin. Only up to 50m
Surface: Monofin on the water surface with snorkel. 15m underwater allowed per turn.
Bi-fins: Bi-fins with snorkel, 15m underwater allowed per turn
Immersion (not organised this time): Underwater with monofin and an oxygen bottle.

The event is fun! It's also a kids event. There are swimmers from different part of UK and even a few from other countries. It's also interesting to see that not only me, everyone treat their gears as their partner and connect with it - the relationship is very similar to a musician to a musical instrument!

My results today
Age group: V1 (1989-1980)
25m Apnoea   Gold
50m Apnoea    Gold
25m Surface  Gold
50m Surface  Gold

World Aquatics Masters Championships [23rd Feb - 4th March 2024, Doha, Qatar]

Building on the success from last year's World Championships in Japan, 9 members of the NUEL Masters squad [11 if you include Kyla and Joe - our adopted teammates] headed to Doha to see how we would fare on the world stage. Not only did we put in some fantastic performances at the world class venues - 21 top 10 finishes including a BRONZE medal winning performance from Federica in her 50 Fly . . . we managed to have just as much fun outside of the pool exploring all that Doha has to offer :)  The competition, which sees thousands of masters athletes from all over the world gather to compete in all of the aquatic disciplines [swimming, open water, waterpolo, diving, artistic swimming] will be held in Singapore in August 2025 - come join us!

[And hope that he will join us for a session or two once in a while :)]

The inspirational film, which stars Annette Bening as Diana  Nyad and Jodie Foster as her coach, is out on Netflix from November.
