West Suffolk Swimming Club (WSSC) was formed in November 1998 from the merger between two local swimming clubs: Bury Beavers and Haverhill Hurricanes. The club was in partnership with St Edmundsbury Borough Council.
We are a competitive club of some 250+ swimming members, catering for all ages and abilities of swimmers. Although we are independent, we work closely with the Swim Academy run by Abbeycroft Leisure and the Swim Scheme at Culford. The Club training sessions are held at three pools: Haverhill Leisure Centre, Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre and Culford School Sports & Tennis Centre.
The Club is affiliated to Swim England (SE) Suffolk County, SE East Region and the Swim England - the national governing body for swimming.
West Suffolk Swimming Club has already produced swimmers who compete at both National and International level. Since our formation, the club has won the Top Club trophy for three consecutive years at the annual Suffolk County Swimming Championships held in Ipswich and each season a number of the Championship titles are claimed by West Suffolk swimmers. The Club also sends strong teams to the SE East Region Championships and the SE National Summer Meet and British Summer Championships each year.
Back in 2006 the club reached the B Final of the prestigious Speedo League - a great achievement by our swimmers and their coaches. WSSC still compete in league galas, with teams competing in the Suffolk League competition - which we won for 7 years straight (2009 - 2015) and have previously competed in the National Arena League (East Midlands League).
Since the closure of both pools around 2010, which adversely affected recruitment for a period, the club has gone from strength to strength with a second place in the Top Club awards for five consecutive years in the Suffolk County Championships and Top Club in the County Development Championships in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
We have a number of swimmers who compete in open water competitions, with swimmers competing at County, Regional and National level.
