SAST Charity Status announcement

Brian Dalgleish

We are delighted to announce that the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) has confirmed that South Ayrshire Swim Team (SAST) meets the charity test and has been entered into the Scottish Charity Register. This means that SAST now has charitable status under the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005.

The advantages of becoming a charity: we can benefit from an increase in public recognition and trust (because we cannot use assets for any purpose other than the pursuit of charitable objectives); we can benefit from tax relief; we are now eligible for additional sources of funding.

Changes now we are a charity: we need to ensure that we publicise that we are a charity in all communications; we are now eligible for gift aid; we have additional reporting responsibilities at the end of each financial year.

What doesn’t change now we are a charity: we will continue to operate in the same way as we always have; our Constitution and annual accounts will continue to be available for anyone that would like to see them.

We are not the first swimming cub to become a charity and are following in the footsteps of the Carnegie SC, North Ayrshire ASC, M&B ASC, Bathgate ASC and Scotia ASC as well as numerous other aquatic based organisations.

If you would like more information on OSCR, please visit their website https://www.oscr.org.uk/

Watch out for more information on how we plan to make use of our new charity status. We will report progress via Team Unify, club emails and annually at our AGM. And if you have any ideas on how to do so, please contact us at [email protected]
