Poolside behaviour

  • Parents / responsible adults
    • Primary school aged swimmers must have a parent poolside for the duration of every session
    • Make sure the swimmer is on time for the sessions, with their full kit
    • Engage with the session so you can talk to your swimmer about it afterwards
    • Let the coaches do their role during the session – don’t interrupt them (leave questions to the end)
    • Do not distract swimmers during the session
    • Respect the coaches' professional opinions on swimming matters and ensure the coach is not undermined in front of swimmers
    • Appreciate the effort that is put in by their children, be it at a gala or at training
    • Appreciate the effort that is put in by the coaches and other club volunteers
  • Swimmers
    • Enjoy your swimming!
    • Let the coach know before arriving at a session if you have an injury so they can establish if you should train in that session – if they advise you not to train, do not attend the session
    • Arrive in good time – if you are late for the session you may not be allowed to join due to injury risk
    • Be ready to swim at the time the session starts (in full kit, hat and goggles on)
    • Do not talk when the coach is talking or demonstrating: look at the coach and give them your full attention
    • Follow every instruction that the coach gives you
    • Strive to improve your swimming
    • Set a good example for younger or less experienced swimmers
    • No mobile phones in the changing rooms
  • Coaches & volunteers
    • Adhere to the Swim England Code of Ethics & Code of Conduct.
    • Endeavour to increase the performance of all swimmers.
    • Ensure that equal opportunity is given to all swimmers.
    • Treat every swimmer fairly and sympathetically.
    • Listen to and take on board the swimmers’ views/explanations/problems.
    • Be fair and constructive when supporting and disciplining swimmers in line with the supportive intervention and disciplinary policy
    • Remember that life is not just swimming!
    • Be positive about the swimmers’ efforts.

Changing room behaviour

  • Strictly no phones or similar devices in the changing rooms at any time (SE policy)
  • Respect each other’s privacy
  • Parents/carers of primary school aged swimmers may enter the changing rooms with their swimmers to help them; other adults should not go into the changing rooms unnecessarily.

Land Training behaviour

  • Wear appropriate gym kit to land training, including trainers (not crocs or sliders)
  • Let the coach know before arriving at a land training session if you have an injury
  • Arrive in good time
  • Commit to the training session and do your best
  • Do not talk while the coach is talking – look at the coach and given them your full attention
  • Remember that land training is part of your swimming training!

Pre-Pool behaviour

  • Arrive in good time to complete pre-pool before you get into the water
  • Remember that pre-pool is an important part of the swimming session
  • If the coach is busy with the previous session, begin your pre-pool warm up yourself
  • Follow the instructions of the coach and complete all the pre-pool exercises fully and with full effort to avoid injury while training
  • Do not talk while the coach is talking – look at the coach and give them your full attention
