Disciplinary process

  • Principles
    • The club’s coaches, committee and its delegates (including Team Managers and Welfare Officer) will intervene where club members are not following the code of conduct
    • The disciplinary process is a combination of immediate action to stop incidents as they happen, and further steps which include conversations
    • Ultimately, club members may be suspended from the club if a resolution is not found
  • Process – swimmer behaviour in training sessions
    • Phase 1 – for incidents as they occur, for example swimmer being disruptive in a session
      • The swimmer will receive a clear verbal warning from the coach, teacher or poolside assistant
      • Parent/carer will be informed per the supportive intervention procedure and asked to attend the following swimming session
    • Phase 2 – ongoing incident (e.g. swimmer continuing to disrupt the session after receiving Step 1)
      • The swimmer is told to leave the pool and sit on the side for 5 minutes
      • Parent/carer will be informed of the action taken
    • Phase 3 - second breach
      • No discussion, swimmer will be removed from the session.
      • Swimmer will get changed and wait by the side of the pool until the end of the session.
      • Parent/carer and welfare officer will be informed and the parent will be asked to talk to the welfare officer
        • Welfare office can delegate this if appropriate and necessary
    • Phase 4 – see ongoing breaches process below
  • Process – ongoing breaches or non-training issues
    • Examples might include:
      • swimmer behaviour ongoing despite parental involvement
      • non-swimming adults not following code of conduct or other policies
    •  Relevant person is called to a meeting with the welfare officer and chair to discuss the issue and agree steps to resolution
    • If the issue cannot be resolved or continues, then the club member may be suspended from the club
  • Issues during pre-pool or land training will be handled in line with the swimming training sessions process with appropriate adaptations for the environment
