I am now officially qualified as a starter!
Swim meets only work because of the volunteers who train to be officials. Without the requisite number of officials, a meet cannot be licenced and our swimmers' times will not be recognised on national rankings. That means improvements in PB's cannot be traced and no entries to qualification events such as Counties :-(
When my daughter, Ruby, started competing I decided I would much rather have a poolside view than be stuck in the gallery - and have to pay for that privilege. Like everyone I started as a timekeeper and then progressed to judge 1, judge 2 and now starter. It's a great journey and a very practical way to both support the club and also your child whilst they compete. Understanding all the swim rules has really helps with coaching too.
We are always looking for new officials, so please talk to myself or Helen (currently training as Judge 2 along with husband Graham) if you’d like to give it a go. You are obliged to wear white though!
