RESULTS

2025

The first outing of the year for most was the North West Masters at Blackpool on 22nd February. Competing were Sara Lang in 50 free 4th then she went on to win both 100m back and 200 Ind/Medley, well done Sara! Will Rothwell swam in 50 free and 100 back achieving good times then on the 50 backstroke finished in 3rd position. Great result. Also swimming was Helen J who won the 50/100/200 breaststroke events and the 50/100 back and 100 Ind/Medley. British Masters Championships, London Aquatics Centre

4 swimmers from Southport took part in this fully subscribed event. In the younger age group, Jacob Lea came 5th in 50 fly and 8th in 50 free while Josh Moniz got an excellent 2nd in 200 backstroke, 3rd 100 back, plus 5th in 100 fly. Niamh Wilgar got bronze medals for 50 free and 200 Individual Medlay and 6th in 50 fly. Great results from a large entry. At the other end of the age range Helen J won the 50/100/200 breaststroke events and came 2nd in 200 backstroke.

Cheshire Masters Meet, Stockport.

SSC were represented by Will Rothwell, who won a bronze in the 50m breaststroke, Sara Lang who got Silver and a gold medal, Helen J who won 3 gold and 1 silver medal. All events were 50m sprints and 100 Ind/Med. 

The British Transplant Games were held earlier in July and Will Rothwell competed winning Bronze in Freestyle, Silver in the back and breaststroke events, despite gettting an injury on his way to the breaststroke medal. Well done Will, hope you are soon able to get back in the water with us.

The Epic Swim in Windermere was held in early August and Maddie Fishlock competed in the 1500m achieving an extremely good time despite the choppy water and finishing first in her age group, Congratulations!

To complete a busy month, Will Rothwell of SSC competed in Germany at the World Transplant Games. He took part in the 50 freestyle finishing 8th, 50m breaststroke 5th then in 100m Backstroke he won a bronze medal, all this with an injured shoulder. Fantastic result Will, we are all very proud of you.

The North West Masters 2 at Blackpool saw just two entries from Southport, Helen and Emma Jenkins. Helen won the 50/100 bk and breast and the 100m I/Med. Emma returning to swimming after two years, came 4th in 50m fly then in 100m breaststroke finished 2nd in a time only 1 second from her PB! All this after being fitted with a Stoma Bag and not even knowing if she could dive in or indeed swim fast as she had been out for so long. Well Done!

At the National Masters Swimming Championships, Elena Priestner and Helen Jenkins took part, Elena in a very competitive field swam very well, finishing in the top 20. Helen won the 200 Bk/100 bk and 200 breaststroke, and in the 100 I/M was 2nd and 3rd in 50 breast.

 

2024

National Masters Championships

SSC had a group of Masters taking part among the 1600 swimmers at Sheffield. Elena Priestner and Jess Law, new to Masters swimming, competed well in their age group, coming in the top half of the draw from a large entry in their events and doing some great times. Sara Lang competed on the backstroke events finishing in the top 10, Well done. Helen J entered the back, breast and 200 m Individual Medlay, gaining 2 silver in the backstrokes and 3 gold in the breaststroke and I/Med races. Also racing were two of our swimmers competing for their new clubs, Jacob Lea and Josh Moniz, both doing very well with achieving top ten places in their back and freestyle events.                                               This hugely competitive event saw many World and European records broken, and even a couple of Olympic swimmers taking part. The location of the GB Masters 2025 should be out shortly and the 2025 Nationals will again be at Ponds Forge in October of next year.

British Transplant Games  Will Rothwell won Gold in 50m breaststroke and Silver for back and free. Not only that he won a silver medal in the Archery, 2nd highest points in all the age groups - Fantastic!

 

DEE Mile    Ruthie, Rosie and Helen all completed the course in near perfect conditions, another great swim

 

EUROPEAN MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS BELGRADE

Helen Jenkins won gold in 200m breaststroke silver in 50m br and 100/200m backstroke. She also finished 3rd in 100m breaststroke.

 

EUROPEAN TRANSPLANT GAMES 

Will Rothwell competed in the above games in Lisbon and finished with gold in 100m breaststroke, silver for 50m breast and 100m freestyle and bronse in 50m free and backstroke, great results!

Over in Stockport at the Cheshire Masters Sprint Meet, Helen finished 1st in 50m back and breast, Will was 3rd in 50 back and 50m free and 4th in 50m breast. Sara Lang came 2nd in 50m breast and 3rd in 50m back and freestyle. Well done all.

GB MASTERS SWANSEA

One of our younger Masters, Jacob Lea won a bronze medal in the 50m fly in Swansea, well done! Also Helen J won the three breaststroke and 3 backstroke events.

NORTH WEST MASTERS RESULTS

Four of our  Masters swam at Blackpool at the weekend with great success.  Josh Moniz won both the 50m backstroke and the 100m backstroke. He also came 1st in 50m fly. Congratulations to Josh. Swimming for the ladies, Sara Lang won the 100m Back, and came 2nd in 50m freestyle and 200m free. Mae Addison swam 100free and 100 breast, coming 2nd in both races in her age group. Finally Emily Kippax entered the 100m free too and also finished 2nd in her group and in the 200m free she was 1st. Huge congratulations to all these swimmers, who have continued with their love of swimming after leaving the main club squad to swim with Seniors/Masters or train on their own while studying.                                                                                  Entries for GB Masters are filling up fast, if you want to enter on Phase 1 - start now!

2023

12th August saw the annual Dee Mile Swim in Chester. Weather was mixed and a bit breezy but a good group from Southport went and we had several age group winners there along with Fraser Cooke who came 3rd in the Skins event. Well done all!

Will Rothwell swam in the British Transplant Games this week and won Gold medals in the Backstroke and freestyle events and a Bronze in the Breaststroke. Many Congratulations Will!

27/7/2023 - This week saw a gathering of some of our long serving masters, most of who have been friends since starting swimming age 10/11yrs. Shows how good swimming is for you and forming life long friendships. Not only that but two of our swimmers surprised us by saying they had got married quietly on Monday, Ruthie and Neil Jackson. Huge congraulations from us all! They celebrated after the wedding by going for a swim at the Delph - of course))

Cheshire Open Meet saw three of our swimmers entering, Helen, Will and Sara Lang.  Will won a gold medal in the 50m breast as did Helen. in the 50m back Helen and Will were 2nd, Sara 4th. The 100 I/M saw Sara finish 3rd and Helen 1st. Sara did a great time coming 5th in 50m free and 3rd in fly. Will finished off with a 5th place in the 50m free. Great results.

Saturday 21st October will be the Southport SC Masters Gala at Dunes, lets see all our swimmers turning out for this event. Aimed at gaining competition experience and some fun relays. Entry forms are on the Swim England Masters Calender.  

British Masters 2023

Three of our ladies made the journey to Sheffield at the weekend for the GB Masters Swimming Championships. Several World records, European records and British records were broken over the weekend.  Swimming in a great pool you always hope to do well and the ladies did. Ruthie Cartwright narrowly missed a medal in the 200m breaststroke coming 4th and also came 5th & 6th respectively in the 50/100 breast. She started the weekend with 800 freestyle finishing in 6th place, a good result among the top in the country. Also swimming was Sara Lang and in her age group she won a bronze medal in the 200 Backstroke and came 9th in the 50m backstroke. Finally Helen Jenkins won the 50/100/200m breaststroke events and the 200m backstroke. She lost out to the winner in 100m back by .4 secs. All were pleased with their times . There  was a full capacity entry and swimmers were limited to five events only. We shortly hope to have a date for our own club gala in the Autumn.

 

 

GREAT NEWS - Southport Masters have been awarded £450 from Swim England to run a Masters Gala in the Autumn. We applied along with many other clubs for various amounts available, and happily were successful in our bid. We hope to run a low level meet, as we did pre Covid, and it will be open to all clubs. Watch this space!!

What do Southport Masters do on a Bank Holiday - they go for a swim, and the photographer, Neil, cycled there just to take the photo! A tropical 12c today.

 

 

Welcome to the New Year for Masters Swimming. A few brave souls braved a New Year Week dip at the Delph, 6c makes Slaidburn seem tropical.

Congratulations to the swimmers who entered the North West Masters Competition at Blackpool. Everyone was a medal winner! A special mention for Emily Kippax who competed in her first Masters Event in the youngest age group. Results for SSC were: 100 I/Med Helen J 1st Emily 3rd. 50 bk Neil Jackson 1st Emily 2nd, Karen B 2nd Ruthie Cartwright 3rd. 100 Breast, Helen 1st. 200 bk Karen 1st. 50 fly Helen 1st. 50 Breast Helen 1st, Ruthie 2nd. 50f/c Emily 4th, Helen 1st, 400 free Helen 1st.

Congratulations to Ruthie and Neil on their success at Swim Wales Masters in Swansea. Medals for both!

 

 

2022 HIGHLIGHTS

August 2022: Will Rothwell won 2 Silver medals at the European Transplant Games - in the 50m Freestyle and Breaststroke. A great result! As another string to his bow, he also won a Gold medal in the Archery! Huge congratulations Will!

July 2022: Southport Swimming Club Masters Will Rothwell won 3 Silver medals in the Transplant Games in Leeds this weekend, 50m Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle. Great result! Well done Will!

At the recent North West Masters Competition, 4 members of our group competed at Blackpool. Ed Clayton won the 100m Fly in his age group in a new record time while Andrew Porter won a gold medal in 100m Free and a silver in 50m free.
Sarah Lang gained medals in 100m back, bronze, and 200m back, silver.
Helen Jenkins raced in 50/100/200 breast and came 1st in all and 100m Ind Medlay, the 50, 200 and Medlay all in new record times. She also came 1st in the 50/100/200 back. The same weekend Will Rothwell competed at Millfield School where he was pleased with some good p.b’s.

2021 HIGHLIGHTS

The British National Masters Championships 2021
A small group of Southport Masters attended the great Ponds Forge pool for the National Masters Championships.
First off was Ed Clayton who finished first in the men’s 100m Fly, well done Ed. He was closely followed on day 1 by Sara Lang who had a busy day gaining three 5th places and a 6th in Free, back, breast and medley.
Also day 1 saw Helen Jenkins winning 50m back and Karen Barton gaining 2nd in her age group. Later 50breast saw Rod Barton finishing a strong 2nd, Helen 3rd in the ladies.
Day 2 brought 200m back and again Helen won her age group and Karen 2nd in hers. Also held was 100m Individual Medley which Helen also won and she was 2nd in 100m breast.
Day 3 saw Karen and Helen in action again, this time both won 100m back in their respective groups. A great result for a small club. This was followed by 200m Breast which Helen also won gold in.
This was one of the biggest entries held at Sheffield in a weekend which saw many World Records broken. Great to be back in competition again.

Dee Mile
A group of swimmers from the club entered the Dee Mile in Chester earlier in August.
Fraser Cooke, Karen Barton & Helen Jenkins won their respective age groups, with Elaine Cooke, Maddie Fishlock, Cath Riseborough, Pam Taylor finishing in the top ten and Claire Essame and Rosie Lewis in top twenty. A great result for our club in rather damp conditions. Well Done!

2020 HIGHLIGHTS

North West Masters in Blackpool
4 of our Masters made the journey to the North West Masters in Blackpool and all came home with medals. Catherine L won s Silver and a Brnze in the 400 and 200 Freestyle, while Emma jenkins got a Gold and Bronze in the Breaststroke and IM. Helen Jenkins won 4 Golds and 2 Silvers in the Backstroke and Breastsroke events while newcomer Andrew Porter won 2 Silver medals in his first outing as a Master. Well done all! 

Lancashire County Masters Championships

A small group from Southport entered the Lancashire Masters Championships in Blackpool in September. Karen Barton won 3 Gold medals in the Backstroke events while Rachel Derby won the 800m Freestyle and was 5th in the 50m Freestyle. Doreen Gordon won 3 Gold medals while Helen Jenkins won 5 Gold and 1 Silver medals.The only male swimmers from the club, Rod Barton put his training to good use by finishing 1st in the 50m Breaststroke. Well done everyone!

Also a small number from the club made the journey up to the Lakes to compete in the Coniston End to End swim, Elaine Cooke, Karen, Catherine Riseborough and Madeleine Fishlock showed their stamina by completing this course.

GB Masters
Helen Jenkins was the only competitor from Southport to make the journey to Swansea and she brought home 3 gold medals, 1 silver and one bronze. The Golds came in the 200m Back and Breast and 100m Breast. The silver in 50m Fly and the bronze for 50m Breast.

A lovely Christmas night out was had at Veronica's in town, organised by Catherine (Thanks)! Great meal and a good laugh-despite Neil's jokes! Also great dancing by Elaine and Lyndsay.

LANCASHIRE COUNTY MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS

A contingent from Southport made the journey to Blackpool for the Lancashire County Masters Championships and came home with medals galore!
The first event, 100 Ind. Medley saw Ruthie Cartwright and Emma Jenkins winning gold, and Helen Jenkins silver medals. In the 200m Free Elaine Cooke came 2nd and Doreen Gordon was first in her age group.
50m Back saw Emma, Helen, Doreen and Karen Barton all winning while Neil Jackson was 2nd in the men’s category.  100 Breast was a Jenkins success,  Helen and Emma both winning, while in the 50m free, Sara Lang and Doreen won and Elaine Cooke was 2nd.
200 back winners were Emma, Karen and Neil. Ruthie swam a great race in the 800 free winning easily. Again winning Helen swam 200breast and Ruthie 50fly. In the 100 free Elaine came 3rd and Doreen won. 50m breast saw gold for Ruthie and Helen and finishing off in the 100m back, all winners from Southport were Helen, Karen and Neil.

Helen recently competed in the European Masters in Slovenia and came home with a 2nd and 3rd Medal, and also finished with two 4th places and two 6th
