Missing Children

Swim England Wavepower

Although rare, if a child leaves a training session and their whereabouts are unknown, and it is not confirmed that their parent or guardian is aware of their location, the following procedures must be followed.

1. Immediate Response

  • Ensure other children are properly supervised while organising a search.
  • If the child's parent/guardian is present, notify them immediately. Otherwise, call them and explain the situation.
  • Try to contact the missing child directly via their mobile phone.

2. Organising a Search

  • Assign responsible adults to search specific areas, such as toilets, changing rooms, facility grounds, and public/private spaces.
  • Designate a central person to coordinate the search and record key information, including:
    • Physical description: height, build, eye/hair colour and style.
    • Clothing: type, brand, and colour.
    • Last known location.

3. Involving Authorities

  • If the child is not found promptly, contact the Police.
  • Follow all Police guidance regarding additional actions.

4. Once the Child is Found

  • Inform parents/guardians, all searchers, and authorities involved.
  • If ongoing safety concerns exist, report to the Swim England Safeguarding and Welfare Team.
