Derby Excel swimming club recently held a successful Christmas social for 72 swimmers across all the squads at Megazone in the Willows Sports Centre in Derby. Well done to all our 15 swimmers who qualified for Swim England’s Nationals Winter Championships which were held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield last week, Thursday to Sunday. Georgie Pryor (27) came away with bronze medals in the 100m backstroke (in a time of 58.79s), and in 100m butterfly in 58.02s. Last weekend Derby Excel hosted our final meet of the year, a level 3 short course at Moorways in Derby. We had entries from 15 clubs, and entries closed in early October because the meet had reached capacity. It was held at the same time as Winter Nationals at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, meaning swimmers from many clubs were competing at both venues. Derby Excel competed in the third and final round of the Arena league, having qualified for Premier League Final at the Sandwell Aquatic Centre, Smethwick. Against some very tough opposition, DX finished in 8th place with 164 points. Many thanks to ice hockey's Sheffield Steelers for inviting our swimmers to attend their match last night against Nottingham Panthers. They very kindly provided compliementary tickets for swimmers/siblings, and reduced prices for parents/carers. In all, over 80 club members attended the game at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield, and for many it was their first ice hockey game. Steelers gave our club a couple of 'shout outs' during the evening.
