Derby Excel Committee

We are very grateful to Lesley Harris, who has nominated Derby Excel to receive a sizable charity donation from her employer Lloyds Bank. Lloyds and many other companies run match funding schemes, whereby the company will donate money to charities as a recognition of fundraising and volunteering by their staff. Lesley has helped raise money for Derby Excel by running the raffle at our Open meet, and was able to claim £500 for Derby Excel as a result. We are excited to announce that the Derby Excel Club Championships will be held at Moorways on Saturday 15th June, from 3pm. All swimmers with Derby Excel as their home club are strongly encouraged to enter. Date for your diary: the Presentation Night will be on Saturday 7th September at 7pm, where trophies and awards will be presented.

After their success at the Derbyshire Masters Long Course Championships, the Masters squad have been busy over the last two weekends. Five members of the squad, Mike, Seb, Charlotte, Craig and Mel travelled to the Staffordshire Masters Championships, with Craig and Mel making their competitive debuts. Some fast swimming, PBs and several medals from the squad and lots of learning to take forward. The Cerebral Palsy Sport National Swimming Championships 2024 were held at Alfreton Leisure Centre last weekend, and was a fantastic event attended by swimmers from all over the country. Swimmers aged 10 years/over are eligible to compete if they have a diagnosis of non-progressive brain damage with motor control dysfunction such as cerebral palsy, traumatic brain inuury, stroke or similar conditions. Derby Excel swimmers have just been competing at the most prestigious domestic meet of the year, the British Championships, which were extra special this year as they were doubling as Olympic Trials. The best swimmers in the country, ie some of the world’s best, all competed to try to book their place in Paris in August. Derbyshire Masters Long Course Championships were held at Moorways last Sunday, and 13 of our Masters competed with great success! Between them, they won 44 medals including 33 golds - amazing! Special mention to Clive who was making his competitive debut, winning gold in the 1500m freestyle. Well done to our relay teams who won 3 golds and a bronze in the 4 relay events.
